Assistant Golf Course Superintendent Job Summary

 

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent directs and oversees daily assignments for the Westfield Group Country Club Grounds. This includes all maintenance duties associated with course care, upkeep and repairs. Strives to help create meaningful and memorable experiences for members and guest by ensuring quality and service standards are met. Supports all aspects of the business operations by managing staff performance and development, duty of care for employees and guests, financial and facility management, and ongoing customer service excellence. Collaborates with other Hospitality Operations leaders and assistant leaders in managing direction and performance of the business unit. Provides back up support in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent.

 

 

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)

1. Directs and oversees daily assignments for the Westfield Group Country Club Grounds. This includes all maintenance duties associated with course care, upkeep and repairs. Collaborates with course leadership to assign the daily tasks for the Westfield Group Country Club Golf Course Operations.

2. Oversees Westfield’s goals, quality standards and brand image by ensuring consistent and timely completion of all course care duties including but not limited to: maintenance of all playing areas, landscapes, hardscapes, water features, naturalized areas, maintenance facilities and equipment.

3. Communicates course conditions, course project status or other activities/changes that may impact customer or member experiences.

4. Collaborates with course leadership in the development of Agronomic, Horticulture and Aquatic Programs which includes research, development, and purchasing. Leads the program execution, inventory management, monitoring effectiveness and year end evaluation of these programs.

5. Performs human capital management responsibilities including employee interviews, selection, on-boarding, performance management, coaching, and development.  Manages priorities and workload distribution, and removes barriers that impede progress.  Completes and submits non-exempt employee payroll and documentation.  

6. Responsible for scheduling part time and seasonal staff on a daily basis and for ensuring sufficient staffing levels for day-to-day course needs.

7. Works with Golf Course Superintendent in communicating and maintaining departmental and company-wide standards, policies and guidelines. Updates as needed, department standards, policies and guidelines. Ensures completion of all compliance and reporting requirements.

8. Collaborates with Golf Course Superintendent with the development and management of annual operating budgets and long range capital expenditure which includes workforce planning, capital projects and equipment replacement strategies. Assistant Superintendent is responsible for drafting plans and budgets to be reviewed with Golf Course Superintendents for employee relations, plant health care programs, supplies and grounds care other.

9. Maintains a healthy and safe environment for employees, members and guests. Responsible for Golf Course Operations Safety Program including the execution, monitoring, reporting, training and year end evaluations.

10. Collaborates with other Hospitality leaders in managing operational performance across the business unit. Attends and participates in regular, ongoing, and project based business unit meetings.

11. Builds and enhances member relations through interaction one-on-one interfaces, educational activities and member events.

12. Provides input to the annual and long range business and workforce plans.

13. Upholds Westfield’s core values and Hospitality Operations guiding principles when representing Westfield Group on campus or off-site.

14. Operates  golf carts and/or other maintenance vehicles in order to accomplish other essential functions outlined above. May have additional travel requirements to fulfill essential functions.

 

 

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)

1. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a supervisor of golf course maintenance operation.

2. Demonstrated strong working knowledge of golf course maintenance procedures and ability to manage operational performance, consistency and compliance with close attention to detail.

3. Ohio Department of Agriculture Pesticide License or the ability to acquire one within 30 days of employment. 

4. A valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.

5. Demonstrated focus and commitment to customer satisfaction.

6. Experience as a team leader or team coordinator with demonstrated ability to collaborate with, develop and lead an efficient and effective team.

7. Knowledgeable in financial acumen including knowledge of budgets, maintaining costs and understanding financial reports.

8. A 2-year college degree in Turf grass Management, Certification, allied field of study OR commensurate work experience.

 

 

 

Physical Requirements (specific to the role) 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

• Ability to remain on feet standing and walking for the majority of the workday including walking over varying terrain.

• Ability to work outdoors in varying and occasionally extreme weather conditions.

• Ability to maintain movement, bend, lift and carry (50lbs)

• Ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative work environment utilizing various technologies such as:  telephone, computer, Management software, Irrigation System software, web, voice, teleconferencing, e-mail, etc.

• Ability to operate an automobile within the parameters of the driving policy.

• Ability to work in an environment where pesticides and other chemicals are used.

• Ability to travel as required.
