Graduate Development Program – Surety Financial Underwriting/Marketing Job Summary

Starting Salary:  $48,500

Are you looking to put your financial analysis skills to work?  We are looking for outgoing candidates interested in using their strong financial and communication skills to start their career path in Surety.

When it’s time to start, advance, or change your career, proper guidance and direction are essential.  At Westfield Insurance, we invest heavily in preparing you for a career within the insurance industry.

The Graduate Development Program (GDP) prepares recent college graduates, experienced professionals looking for a change of industry, and Military Veterans for an exciting career at Westfield.  The GDP combines a variety of learning techniques, including:

  • Classroom-based training on insurance-related topics, critical thinking, marketing, collaboration, and customer service.

  • Observation and practice elements are included to increase exposure to the business unit and to complete assigned research topics.

  • Self-study eLearning to support project work and individual development.

  • Team-building activities with peers.

  • Networking with leaders across the organization.

  • Coaching and mentoring throughout the program from experienced employees.

As a Surety team member, you will work closely with both mentors and peers as you complete our Contract Surety Training program. The program will help you build a foundation for selecting risks that have profit potential as well as developing and maintaining relationships with our independent agency partners who provide us opportunities to write business. The underwriting process requires evaluating businesses by reviewing industry, business, and governmental data, then deciding whether to accept or decline the risk. A large part of that decision involves meeting with a business’s management team to gauge the organization’s business plans and capabilities as well as understanding and interpreting financial trends and forecasted results. Successful completion of the training program prepares you to begin your career path toward a Surety Underwriter role in one of our service offices located around the United States. Recent or upcoming (December of ’19 or May of ’20) college graduates as well as those with up to 2-3 years of post college work experience are encouraged to apply for our 2020 GDP opening.

It is preferred that the selected candidate go through the Graduate Development Program at our Home Office in Westfield Center, OH.  Additional discussion of the GDP would be reviewed as you get later into your interview process.  The anticipated start date for the Graduate Development Program is June of 2020.
