Fitness Instructor Job Summary

  • $20-$35 an hour
  • Seeking an instructor with lunchtime availability and possibility for morning or after work classes.  


In a group environment, the Fitness Instructor leads members through a format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength and endurance, while ensuring the safety of our members.  The Fitness Instructor also serves as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness.

 

Essential Functions (primary functions and/or reasons the job exists in order of importance)
1. Teaches at least TWO of the following formats:  Kickboxing, Step, Zumba or Dance, Pilates, Cycling, Barre, Yoga while providing a positive and enjoyable class atmosphere; gives encouragement, and creates a comfortable and appealing environment through music and communication. 
2. Clearly describes and adequately demonstrates performed exercises for group fitness participants.  Provides complete instructions, including body alignment, movement execution, muscle groups and corrections.
3. Prepares for class (i.e. playlists, choreography, progressions and regressions, getting to know participants) and provides open and friendly communication with members and coworkers.
4. Operates and troubleshoots audio equipment.
5. Demonstrates variety with choreography, music and exercises.  Uses appropriate level of intensity, pace, time breakdown and choice of exercise for each class.
6. Advises participants of possible injury risks.
7. Monitors attendance at each of the class sessions.
8. Reports injuries immediately to Fitness and Wellness Leader.
9. Encourages participants to attend other classes that are aligned with their fitness goals.
10. Serves as a role model for employees to achieve fitness goals.

 

Desired Qualifications/Experience/Certification/Education (in order of importance)
1. 6+ months of teaching experience in a group fitness format.
2. A nationally recognized group fitness certification such as AFAA, ACE or ACSM, or willing to obtain upon employment.  
3. Must be available to teach at least 3 days at the discretion (day/time) of the fitness center leader and flexible for substitute as needed.  
4. Certified in CPR/AED.
5. Knowledge of safe exercise techniques and group fitness principles.
6. Experience developing and delivering aerobic exercise activities.
7. Positive leadership and motivational skills.
8. Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, resulting in the ability to interact with all levels of the employee population.
9. Ability to build a rapport or professional relationship with Fitness Center participants.

 

Physical Requirements (specific to the role) 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
• Must be able to physically demonstrate and participate in the classes taught for entire duration.
• Activities could include, but are not limited to: walking, running, jumping, stretching, lifting weights, bending, etc. 
• Ability to lift and/or move basic gym equipment including, but not limited to: free weights, mats, exercise equipment, etc.
